[New paper] Supporting dementia carers in LMICs

Our new systematic review and meta-analysis on interventions supporting carers of people with dementia in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

News 27 Feb 2025

Our paper on interventions supporting carers of people with dementia in low- and middle-income countries has now been published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

The project originally began as coursework for HP407: Evidence Review and Synthesis for Decision Making at the London School of Economics, where I received guidance from Dr Huseyin Naci. The course focuses on the principles and methods of systematic reviews and meta-analysis for health policy decision making.

Following Dr Naci’s introduction, the project later became part of the STRiDE (Strengthening Responses to Dementia in Developing Countries) consortium, where it was developed further as a collaborative systematic review.

In this study, we analysed randomised controlled trials evaluating interventions designed to support carers of people living with dementia in low- and middle-income countries. The results suggest that these interventions can reduce carers’ burden, depression and anxiety, while also improving several outcomes for people with dementia.

Many thanks to the entire STRiDE team, especially Professor Martin Knapp, who led the consortium, and Zhiwei Hu and Meizhi Li, who supported the review process.
